In 1972, Prabhakaran started a group called the Tamil New Tigers (TNT). In July 1975 he shot dead Alfred Duryappa, the mayor of Jaffna.[16] Duryappa was also a Tamil, but Prahbhakaran believed he had become too close to the Sri Lankan government. Prabhakaran went to India to escape from the police

It was founded in 1984.[1] The Sea Tigers had a number of small but effective suicide bomber vessels.[2] During its existence it had gained a reputation as a capable adversary for the Sri Lankan Navy.[Over the years the Sea Tigers had sunk at least 29 Sri Lankan small inshore patrol boats and one freighter.

The Black Tigers (Tamil: கரும்புலிகள்) were a wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a militant Tamil separatist organization. From their formation in 1987 until the defeat of the Tamil Tigers in 2009, more than 330 Black Tigers made suicide attacks on air, land and sea, mostly in Sri Lanka.

Though the existence of the Air Tigers had been the subject of speculation for many years, the existence of the wing was only revealed after an attack in March 2007, during Eelam War IV
